Coffee Sustainability - Upcycling/Recycling Tips
You are on your third pot of coffee for the day and just can't quite get it down? That's weak, you gotta get those numbers up rookie. Just kidding, I think this is a common problem to have, leftover coffee. Also, we are here to absolve you from your wrongdoings, not condemn, everyone is accepted and welcome no matter what. So is there anything useful you can do with this other than dumping it down the drain and tossing it in the trash?
Ok, first, and easiest, just stick that unused coffee in the fridge. Even if you're a snob about fresh coffee, this will usually keep it tasting fine for 24 hours at least, and if you're not, then you can even save it for longer.
Freeze! What are you doing to that coffee, straight to coffee jail, you scoundrel!
Second, and related to the first, stick that leftover coffee into an ice cube tray, then use those ice cubes the next time you make coffee. This will make a smooth ice coffee drink without diluting the flavor of the coffee! It's a pretty neat trick that baristas wouldn't tell ya about, but that's why I'm here to share these tidbits of genius.
Third, add that shiz to a tray of brownies and take you and your friends straight to Flavortown, the USA with the delicious acidity of coffee that perfectly balances the sweet chocolate tones. Any brownies work, even from the box. Just replace the water with coffee. (Try at your own risk, you may eat the whole pan by yourself.)
Coffee, it's What Plant CRAVE!
The next idea is, Pour it on your plants. I can't believe it, everything likes coffee. Goats, roses, you, and your mom (don't ask how I know). Seriously though check out this article by MorningChores.com, in it, they list 43 plants that might enjoy a little coffee shower every now and then. A quick peek at some:
Also, just dump your grinds into your garden, it's an awesome source of nitrogen which most plants need to grow big and strong!
New England Traitor
Make Chili. Now if your parents are from the Eastern Cost you might get disowned. I take no responsibility for rifts in the family caused by this. Now this one I haven't tried, but as an avid chili maker and eater, I think my next batch I'll have to give this a shot. Although usually, I can't taste anything anyway because I always have the bright idea to put habaneros in it.
Oatmeal? More like GOATmeal
Make the greatest oatmeal of all time by adding a dribble or a cup of coffee for them to bathe in! Leave overnight and have coffee and breakfast already ready for you when you wake up! It's a pretty amazing discovery to combine these. Add some chocolate chips if you feeling really frisky.
Ok, I'm done, these are just a few ideas if you find yourself needing absolution from your coffee-wasting sins. If you want to find coffee so delicious there are never any leftovers, check out my store!
